Why Professional treatment is so important

Professional advice and hands on care is extremely important to ensure that injuries are managed for best recovery. The body is a complex structure, with many systems operating together, including so many joints, muscles and nerves. A professional trained in how the body systems and physical structures work and interact, knows what "normal" is and can quickly identify injured areas from a car accident. Our Chiropractor and Physiotherapist have training and extensive experience in treating these complex injuries. They also document the details and communicate with your insurance company and in some cases, your lawyer, regarding your injuries and recovery.

There are timelines for different phases of healing after a car accident and your practitioner will guide you along the way. Most importantly, they treat the healing scar tissue in joints. ligaments and muscles to get you moving and feeling better.

Why Whiplash injury is unique

  • Extremely high forces go through your body because of the size and speed of motor vehicles, combined with forces from seat belts, airbags, and the foot being on the brake.

  • Multiple areas and joints of the body are involved in the injury.

  • Overstretching/tearing injuries can occur as well as compressive forces on the joints. Muscle guarding, inflammation and stiffness with healing can limit joint mobility and function.

  • The brain and nerves can also feel the impact of whiplash forces. Some people experience concussion symptoms or nerve injuries which needs special management.

  • Research is clear that early interventions improve outcomes.

  • If left untreated, the body will compensate and be prone to injury and difficulties in the future.

  • Unfortunately, motor vehicle accidents are often associated with premature arthritis and potentially permanent health problems.

Timeline for Healing — Patience is Required

Due to the complexity of car accident injuries, the timeline for healing can vary considerably and is based on many factors like road conditions, size and speed of vehicles, severity of injury, pre-existing conditions, etc.

Generally, there is an acute stage of pain, inflammation and decreased mobility for a minimum of 6 weeks. Then, tissues can tolerate more stretching and strengthening. Naturally, scar tissue continues to shrink over several months, sometimes up to a year. This often causes an increase of stiffness and pain within injured areas. This becomes problematic for the small spinal joints as they can lose flexibility and are difficult for a person to isolate and stretch on their own.

We recommend a schedule of care that minimizes the opportunity for stiffness to develop in scar tissue, joints and muscles, staying ahead of acute setbacks.

It can feel a bit like a roller coaster, feeling better some days and worse other days, trying to pace yourself with activities, work, etc. This is common, and why continuing care is important. Our practitioners will give you tips and advice on how to heal optimally along the way.

Positive mental attitude and visualization/medication can also be very beneficial. Home exercises of stretching and strengthening are very important. Try to stay patient with the process of healing and ask your practitioner any questions you may have.
