The power of light touch in the right place.
Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle and relaxing treatment that focuses on balancing connective tissue tensions in the body. It can alleviate deep tensions and pain in the body, brain and spine, especially those caused by trauma or surgery. Experiencing deep relaxation of the nervous system is one of its many benefits, so it is also an effective stress management strategy. Craniosacral therapy also improves flexibility and a sense of wellness. It is usually part of an integrated treatment plan that may include Chiropractic, Physiotherapy or Massage, based on an individuals needs and goals.
Because craniosacral therapy works on deeper connective tissues in the body it is effective for even complicated cases including chronic pain or multiple areas of pain/injury and is worth trying when other techniques have not been as successful. Treatments are done with the client fully clothed, in a quiet, relaxed room, using light touch to restricted areas.
Mary Lynne Jones PT, our Physiotherapist has completed the advanced Pediatric Craniosacral therapy program and advanced Brain Craniosacral therapy through the Upledger Institute in Florida. She has also completed her 4 levels of Craniosacral therapy for adults. She is comfortable treating babies, children, pregnant women and adults with craniosacral therapy. Craniosacral therapy can be part of an integrated treatment program for musculoskeletal problems, chronic pain and stress, balance/dizziness problems, neurological conditions including stroke, concussion, Alzheimer's/Dementia, Children's health conditions like developmental delay, plagiocephaly (mis-shapen head), cerebral palsy, spina bifida, ADD/ADHD and autism. Seniors can also benefit from craniosacral therapy.
Please see our Children's Health page or our Healthy Aging page for more information about our practitioners and children's health conditions treated at Midnapore Health Centre.
This technique is not as “evidence based” as other techniques due to its subtle, yet complex effects on the whole body and difficulty in isolating these effects with research models. In Mary Lynne's opinion, she sees very positive and lasting results every day using this technique. There is research showing it's effectiveness treating retired NFL Football players with residual symptoms of ongoing pain, headaches, sleep and mental health disturbances, who experienced many concussions during their careers. There is current active research with very promising results for treating and preventing Alzheimers/Dementia.

Pediatric Craniosacral Therapy
Common baby and childhood problems can be treated using the gentle approach of craniosacral therapy. By gently loosening tensions in the body and nervous system, your child can feel and function their best. It also generally has a calming effect, which can benefit sleep, digestion and mood.
An integrated treatment approach may combine craniosacral therapy with physiotherapy, chiropractic or massage.
Like adults, babies and children can experience physical and emotional injuries. The birth process, falls, bumps and bruises can cause subtle to severe trauma in children, and sometimes unexplained crying, poor sleep or digestion, and behavioral problems may be the only way your child is able to communicate that something is bothering them.
Colic, breastfeeding and sleeping difficulties, developmental delay, mis-shapen or flat head (plageocephaly) in babies can be concerning for parents. Craniosacral therapy can contribute greatly to alleviating some of these symptoms. It can also help a premature baby’s body and nervous system adjust better. In older children, postural problems such as scoliosis, flat feet, clumsiness, and slouching posture along with DNS can make a big difference
